THE 2017 SUPREME COURT OF MISSOURI HISTORICAL SOCIETY

INTERNSHIPS WITH THE MISSOURI STATE ARCHVES

The Missouri State Archives announces two internship opportunities for qualified undergraduate or graduate students interested in working with the Supreme Court of Missouri case files held by the Missouri State Archives.

The Archives holds tens of thousands of Supreme Court of Missouri files documenting each case heard by the court between 1804 and 2014. These case files contain primary materials found in no other repository, e.g. briefs. motions, circuit and appellate decisions, related correspondence, transcripts and notes. Further, they provide a history of broad topics in Missouri's experience, such as slavery, women's issues, immigration, the Civil War, the Ozarks, fur trapping and steamboats.

The 2017 Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Society interns will flatten, surface clean and re-house case file documents. Additionally, they will continue to build the Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Records Database by entering case file information. This dynamic indexing project enables researchers to search the case files in the Archives' holdings by name of party, year filed and keywords.

Two successful candidates will be awarded $3000 each for eight weeks of work during the summer of 2017. Interested students must submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, college transcript, a description of any research conducted in a related field and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can describe the applicant's qualifications for this award.

These monetary awards, funded by the Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Society, are intended to defray travel and living expenses. Created in 1999 as a way to improve access to the records of the Supreme Court of Missouri, the internships are made possible through funding from the Supreme Court of Missouri Historical Society.

Review of completed applications will begin on March 15. Notification of awards will be made in April.
