The following is an account of Truman's speaking style during the whirlwind train tour, taken from Loren Reid's January 5, 1973 article published in the Kansas City Times:

No elaborate verbal curtain separated speaker from listeners. The communication was immediate and direct. And listeners liked it. Wherever he spoke, he drew large crowds. The rear platform of the Ferdinand Magellan pullman car was provided with amplifying equipment. When he left the train he packed halls, auditoriums, public squares, ball parks.

Margaret Truman Daniels has said that he acted as if he wanted to talk to the whole population one at a time. If, during a speech, someone yelled at him, he took time to answer back. His impromptu, off-the-cuff, energetic style — filled with local references and facts of interest to each specific audience — was highly effective. (Kansas City Times, January 5, 1973)
