Historical and Biographical Notes
After Governor Thomas Reynolds committed suicide while in office on February 9, 1844, Lieutenant Governor Meredith Miles Marmaduke (D) became the eighth governor of Missouri. He was a native of Virginia and moved to Franklin, Missouri, in the early 1820s, engaging in the Sante Fe trade. In the mid-1830s, he moved his home to Arrow Rock in Saline County. During his short tenure (February 9 - November 20, 1844), he concentrated on the state militia, swamplands, and mental health.
