Historical and Biographical Notes
A lawyer educated in Tennessee, John Cummins Edwards (D) became the ninth governor of the state of Missouri in 1844. A bachelor and the youngest to hold the office, his gubernatorial tenure spanned the Mexican War and saw the final resolution of the ongoing Missouri-Iowa border dispute. Other accomplishments were providing for the instruction of the deaf, dumb, and blind; establishment of an asylum for the insane; and memorials to Congress to improve the Osage River, build a railroad from Hannibal to St. Joseph, strengthen laws to recover runaway slaves, and organize the territory west of Missouri. A year after his term expired, Edwards left Missouri for California during the Gold Rush.
