ITINERANT VENDORS’ LICENSES, 1911-1927

Arrangement: Chronological and thereunder alphabetical

Scope and Content

This series consists of applications and licenses for itinerant vendors in the state of Missouri. Many of the licenses were cancelled or surrendered to the secretary of state for the refund of the deposit. Per RSMo 150.390, last revised in 1929, the director of revenue now oversees these duties.

Itinerant vendors include “all persons, both principal and agents, who engage in, or conduct, in this state, either in one locality or in traveling from place to place, a temporary or transient business of selling goods, wares and merchandise with the intention of continuing in such business in any one place for a period of not more than one hundred and twenty days, and who, for the purpose of carrying on such business, hire, lease or occupy, either in whole or in part, a room, building, or other structure, for the exhibition and sale of such goods, wares and merchandise and do not have a permanent place of business in Missouri” (RSMo 150.380). Peddlars, merchants, and manufacturers have their own licenses apart from itinerant vendors.

Only a handful of applications and licenses remain. Applications contain the name and residence of applicant; whether principal or agent; who owns the wares; who the wares were bought from; and the notarized signature of the applicant. The license itself contains the name and residence of the licensee and is dated and signed by the secretary of state; it may also include an endorsement of the county clerk. There are a few pieces of correspondence and a copy of the 1911 law regarding itinerant vendors.
