EXECUTIVE ORDER

WHEREAS, only five years after the end of World War II, the United States found itself again embroiled in a major international conflict when, in the early morning hours of June 25, 1950, the communist government of North Korea launched an attack into South Korea; and

WHEREAS, determined to support the world's imperiled democracies, the United States immediately led a United Nations force to the remote Asian peninsula for what became a prolonged and bitter fight that threatened to explode beyond Korean borders; and

WHEREAS, those who fought in the Korean War sought only to protect the anguished and the innocent, and in doing so suffered great losses while defending the ideals of bravery, duty and honor; and

WHEREAS, on June 23, 2000, President William J. Clinton proclaimed July 27, 2000, National Korean War veterans Armistice Day; and

WHEREAS, President Clinton, by Proclamation, called on all America to observe these periods with appropriate ceremonies and activities that honor and give thanks to our distinguished Korean War veterans; and

WHEREAS, President Clinton, by Proclamation, called on the Federal departments, agencies and interested groups, organizations and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff on July 27, 2000, in memory of the Americans who died as a result of their service in Korea; and

WHEREAS, the Office of the Governor and the State of Missouri wish to pay tribute to the 1.5 million Korean War veterans and their families, especially those whose loved ones who did not return.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mel Carnahan, Governor of the State of Missouri, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the State of Missouri, do hereby order and direct the Office of Administration to fly the Flag of the State of Missouri and the Flag of the United States at half-staff at all state facilities on July 27, 2000, and each year thereafter through July 27, 2003, in memory of the Americans who died as a result of their service in the Korean War.
