Grandpa's Farmall F-20 Tractor
Submitted by: Barbara Placht

Missouri History category winner Barbara Placht (New Haven, MO) was chosen for the transformative story of her Grandfather's F-20 Farmall tractor, purchased in 1937 to replace a team of mules on the family farm. Placht's story exemplified the can-do spirit of Depression era Missourians fighting against the odds to provide for their families. The Placht family took it upon themselves to restore the tractor to its shiny red glory after being left in a field and rusted from many years of neglect.

St. Louis Riverfront Maps
Submitted by: Jan Wenk

Family History category winner Jan Wenk (Crestwood, MO) told the saga of a steamboat-engineering ancestor. Wenk used beautifully illustrated pictorial maps of the St. Louis riverfront dating from the late 1850's to track down more information on the Ocean Spray, a paddle wheel steamboat that her great-great grandfather's uncle piloted on the Mississippi River.

Union Army Private Fredrick Buehrle
Submitted by: Bill Stine

Civil War History category winner Bill Stine (Jefferson City, MO) mustered up the tale of Union Army Private Fredrick Buehrle. Buehrle's service included marching in the battles of Carthage and Wilson's Creek with famed German-American General Franz Sigel. After years of service in both the Missouri House and Senate, the seasoned soldier finally succumbed to sickness after getting wet while marching in a Civil War veteran's parade in 1915.

Turn of the Century Home Historic Snapshot in Ashland, Missouri
Submitted by: Kimberly Ponder

An historic snapshot of a turn of the century home in Ashland, Missouri helped Kimberly Ponder (Columbia, MO) claim the title of winner of Best Photograph. The house has long since been demolished, but the photograph captures the simple rural elegance of the stately home, complete with a grass-roofed outbuilding used for drying tobacco, a friendly reminder of the area's once most lucrative cash crop.

Congratulations to all the finalists!
