Kander Encourages Participation in Summer Reading Programs
Sign Up at Your Local Library
Jefferson City, Mo. — Secretary of State Jason Kander today encouraged parents and guardians to make plans for their children to participate in summer reading programs. Local libraries across Missouri have begun their annual push to sign up families for reading programs that promote literacy skills and help keep children’s minds sharp while school is out.
"Summer reading programs help foster a lifelong love of reading," Kander said. "A good book exercises a child’s imagination and provides a strong foundation for learning when school starts up again."
This year’s summer reading program theme is "Fizz, Boom, Read!" It encourages students to think about and have fun with science as they complete the program.
Reading programs play an important role for student learning because reading skills often decline during summer break. Consistent reading throughout the summer helps students stay intellectually engaged, strengthens their literacy skills and prepares them for a strong start in the next academic year.
Participation in summer reading programs is open to children with physical or visual disabilities, too. Wolfner Library, the state’s public library for Missourians unable to read standard print, provides individuals with accessible reading materials at no charge. It also operates summer reading programs for children and teenagers ages 18 years and younger. Because the library distributes materials by mail and over the Internet, eligible Missourians in all regions of the state can enjoy the collection’s fiction and nonfiction audio books, fiction and nonfiction braille books, and large-print children’s books.
The public may contact the Missouri State Library, a division of Kander’s office, at 1-800-325-0131 for help getting in touch with their local public library.
