Who knows what will happen when you get in the car? Sometimes you can have a grand adventure; and sometimes it can be downright scary. Check out some of these fiction works highlighted by Reader Advisor Paul Mathews, all involving cars.
The Betsy by Harold Robbins.
The founder of the Hardeman dynasty and Bethlehem Motors, now part of a giant monopoly, is still powerful at the age of 91. He challenges the leadership of his grandson by making plans for a dream car to be called the Betsy. Explicit descriptions of sex and strong language. RC 51098.
Boy's Life by Robert R. McCammon.
Zephyr, Alabama, 1964. Cory and his father, Tom, are making milk deliveries when suddenly a car speeds past them, hurtles down an embankment, and plunges into a lake. Tom immediately leaps into the lake, hoping to save the driver. But when he reaches the car, he sees the face of murder. This chilling, macabre love tragedy, set in 1978 in Pittsburgh, centers on teenage misfit Arnie Cunningham and his devotion to and ultimate possession by his '58 Plymouth Fury, "Christine." Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny.
A handful of survivors attempt to pilot their awesome fire-breathing machine across a hellish nuclear wasteland where huge bats attack at will and madmen crucify scientists along the deserted highways. Some strong language. RC 14461.
Escape the Night by Richard North Patterson.
In 1959, publishing heir Charles Carey and his wife die in a car accident. Their young son Peter is rescued from the wreck by Charles's brother, Phillip. Peter, rather than Phillip, later inherits 51 percent of the business. Now grown, Peter is trying to decipher his nightmares, unaware that someone is listening to his every word, just as with his father. Strong language, violence, and explicit descriptions of sex. It looked like an ordinary eight-cylinder 1954 Buick Roadmaster abandoned at a Pennsylvania gas station. But within hours, an investigating policeman has inexplicably vanished. The Last Convertible by Anton Myrer.
Saga of five Harvard classmates who successively own a Packard convertible they name Empress. Begins in the 1940s as they come of age, go off to war, seek careers, and marry. The Powwow Highway by David Seals.
When Montana Cheyenne Philbert Bono acquires a beat-up '64 Buick he christens it his warrior pony, the Protector. Bono and his car are enlisted by Vietnam vet Buddy Red Bird, who is on a frantic mission to bust his sister Bonnie out of jail in Santa Fe. The hitch is that Bonnie's arrest involved planted drugs and the mafia, and the bail is much higher than Buddy can pay. Strong language, some violence, and some explicit descriptions of sex. A vintage 1927 New Phantom Rolls Royce is missing from Bill Billingsgate's collection of rare cars. Sarah Kelling Bittersohn and her husband Max have been asked to do some sleuthing during Billingsgate's annual Renaissance Revel, and also to keep an eye on the rest of his priceless collection. Wild Kat by Karen Kijewski.
Private Investigator Kat Colorado is on the way to Fresno when an out-of-control car passes her and crashes into the center divider. She goes to the driver's rescue and, as a result, is hired to protect Jude Hudson's wife, Amanda, whose car he had been driving. Amanda, who works for Louden Medical Supply, has discovered that the company is making defective artificial hearts, and she is trying to blow the whistle. Kat Colorado series, book 5.
