For cat lovers everywhere, here is a collection of books about cats compiled by Reader Advisor Paul Mathews.
The Best Cat Ever by Cleveland Amory.
Polar Bear is the New York cat known from The Cat Who Came for Christmas (RC 26048, BR 7225) and The Cat and the Curmudgeon (RC 31599, BR 8269), and writer and animal rights activist Amory is his proud owner. In this final tribute to Polar Bear, Amory mixes reminiscences about his own youth with the bittersweet story of the end of his beloved cat's life after their fourteen years as roommates. Amory has since adopted kitten Tiger Bear. Cat trilogy, book 3. RC 37614, BR 9432.
The Cat: History, Biology, and Behavior by Muriel Beadle.
Complete compendium of information about domestic cats corrects many misapprehensions and myths. Also includes a history of the long association of cats with human beings. RC 15358.
A Cat Abroad: The Further Adventures of Norton, the Cat Who Went to Paris, and His Humans by Peter Gethers.
Sequel to The Cat Who Went to Paris (RC 34131, BR 8854). Gethers and his Scottish Fold cat Norton go on tour--Gethers signing books and Norton holding court for his growing fan club. The duo and their friend Janis then embark on a year-long visit to France. "Le chat" Norton continues to be showered with attention, both in France and on side trips to Italy and Holland. The Cat series, book 2. Some strong language. RC 37530, BR 9458.
The Cat and the Curmudgeon by Cleveland Amory.
The ostensibly irascible Amory continues his observations on life with his feisty cat, Polar Bear. Unimpressed by the trappings of celebrity hood, Polar Bear is attentive to serious issues, such as animal protection rights and the fur coat dilemma, and takes a decided interest in Amory's romantic life, not to mention the new kitten, Polar Star. Sequel to "The Cat Who Came for Christmas." Cat trilogy, book 2. RC 31599, BR 8269.
A Cat Is Watching: A Look at the Way Cats See Us by Roger A. Caras.
Caras uses observations on his own cats' behavior to enhance his tour of a cat's world. He describes how cats hear and see more than humans, how they taste the air, and how their ability to sense variations in magnetic intensity helps them find their way home over extremely long distances. He also discusses their role in history and the value of human- cat bonding. RC 31773.
The Cat Who Came for Christmas by Cleveland Amory.
As head of the Fund for Animals, the author is forever saving and housing homeless dogs, cats, and birds in his New York City apartment. But he never allows himself to keep one as a pet because of his heavy travel schedule. Everything changes one fateful Christmas Eve, however, when Amory rescues and brings home an injured, terrified cat, and finds that he can't part with it. This is the story of their first year together, as the lives of man and cat intertwine. Cat trilogy, book 1. RC 26048, BR 7225.
Catwatching by Desmond Morris.
A noted British zoologist applies his astute powers of observation and broad knowledge of animal behavior to the subject of pet cats. Describes their rites of courtship, mating, fighting, and territorial manners. Morris answers, among many questions, why a cat purrs, wags its tail, and hisses, and why it is reputed to have nine lives. RC 26194.
The Indoor Cat: How to Understand, Enjoy, and Care for House Cats by Patricia Curtis.
Covers diet, safety, health, behavior, and communication. Examines some popular myths, explores the realm of feline emotions, and offers advice on how to create the happiest environment for your cat. RC 19075.
James Herriot's Cat Stories by James Herriot.
In Herriot's childhood his favorite animal was the cat, so he looked forward to studying cats in veterinary school. He was appalled to discover that anatomy books ignored cats, but during the fifty years that Herriot practiced veterinary medicine, he met many cats and learned a great deal about them. Here he offers ten stories about some of the cats who have come into his life, including Oscar, the socialite, and Alfred from the sweetshop. RC 38880, BR 9752.
Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition: The Remarkable Journal of Shackleton's Polar-bound Cat by Caroline Alexander.
The whimsical chronicle of Mrs. Chippy, a male cat that sailed with Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition to Antarctica. Recounts the perils of sailing on frozen seas, the ordeal of being stranded when the ship was crushed by ice, and the crew's miraculous escape and survival. RC 46193.
My Cat Spit McGee by Willie Morris.
Mississippi author of My Dog Skip (RC 41612) recalls how he had to overcome his fear of cats when his beloved fiancée wanted one. On Christmas Eve the family took in a stray who later had kittens--one with two different eye colors. RC 52219, BR 13597.
Ranch of Dreams: The Heartwarming Story of America's Most Unusual Animal Sanctuary by Cleveland Amory.
A noted animal lover recounts the childhood influences that formed his anticruelty outlook and led him to found the Black Beauty Ranch, a refuge for abused and abandoned animals. Tells the stories of the cats, dogs, goats, horses, and other creatures that have found sanctuary with the author. RC 47142.
The Tribe of Tiger: Cats and Their Culture by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas.
Author of The Hidden Life of Dogs (RC 37305, BR 9410) turns to the thirty-five different species of cats. She explains the evolution of cats (they come from the mongoose tribe) and discusses their behavior and their carnivorous diet ("meat-eating alone accounts for a cat's sense of fun, of play"). Pumas, tigers, house cats, and others are observed in a variety of urban environments. RC 41278, BR 10257.
