Dangerous Passage: The Santa Fe Trail and the Mexican War by William Y. Chalfant.

Set in the late 1840s, this is the story of a road that ran from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and the role it played in the Mexican War and in claiming southwest territory for the United States. The road, known as the Santa Fe Trail, played an equally dramatic role during encounters with Native Americans that soon escalated into the Indian Wars. Adult reading level.
