Body Snatcher by Juan Carlos Onetti.
First published in 1964. Larsen, known as Body Snatcher, tries to set up the "perfect brothel" in Santa Maria. A legal permit is issued, but then the townspeople object. At the same time, crazed Julita starts an affair with her late husband’s younger brother. Each story revolves around a tragicomic attempt to preserve ideals, but circumstances prevent such dreams from coming true. Some strong language and some explicit descriptions of sex. RC 35268.

How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez.
The four Garcia girls and their parents escape the secret police in the Dominican Republic by moving to the United States. Vignettes from different family members' perspectives illustrate the culture shock they experience when they trade their pampered lifestyle for their new status as immigrants. Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel.
When Pedro asks Mama Elena for the hand of her youngest daughter, Tita, he is offered her sister instead. By family tradition, Tita is to remain unmarried to care for her mother. A Little Love by C.C. Medina.

Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Set in a South American seaport town during the colonial era, with its sharp division between the rich and poor classes. Twelve-year-old Sierva Maria de Todos Los Angeles is bitten by a rabid dog and handed over to the church for exorcism, where she is adored by a bookish priest. Their forbidden love becomes a symbol of barriers breaking and cultures blending. RC 40555.

Tent of Miracles by Jorge Amado.
In Bahai, Brazil, a poor poet is commissioned to track down the facts in the life of the late Pedro Archango, writer, anthropologist, and woman-chaser, said to be in league with the Devil himself. Explicit descriptions of sex. RC 15045.

Who Killed Palomino Molero? by Mario Vargas Llosa.
A detective story with a political punch focusing on two back country Peruvian policemen who investigate the torture and murder of a young soldier. As the two detectives go about their job of questioning and searching for suspects, they also uncover racial antagonism, sexual taboos, and a corrupt military.
