Americans have been as interested in their first families as their presidents. For those of our readers who would like to learn more about those who have called the White House their home, Reader Advisor Ginny Ryan has compiled a list of some of the books available in the Wolfner collection.
Abigail Adams: A Biography by Phyllis Lee Levin.
An account of the second first lady, the wife of one president and mother of another. Quotes extensively from the subject's letters and diaries. Levin depicts Abigail's life in colorful detail and presents, through her eyes, vivid portraits of husband John, friend Tom Jefferson, and acquaintances the Marquis de Lafayette and Ben Franklin. Alice Roosevelt Longworth by Carol Felsenthal.
Biography of Theodore Roosevelt's notorious, rabble-rousing daughter, Alice, who became the darling of the society pages. Felsenthal suggests that it was Alice's shyness and her feeling of abandonment that accounted for her brash exterior. RC 27734.
America’s Queen: The Life of Jacqueline Kennedy by Sarah Bradford.
The British author describes the life of the former first lady. Assesses her relationships with the various men in her life, her role in the White House, her chronic obsession with money, and her later days in New York. RC 51344.
Bess W. Truman by Margaret Truman.
Drawing on her reminiscences and her parents' voluminous correspondence, Margaret Truman offers an intimate portrait of her reticent mother. Stresses Bess Truman's lifelong loyalty to her own mother as the predominant influence on her life, marriage, and motherhood. RC 23043.
First Ladies by Margaret Truman.
"First daughter" Truman provides a group portrait of America's first ladies, from Martha Washington to Hillary Rodham Clinton. Truman compares and contrasts the roles each first lady played in her husband's administration. RC 44441.
First Mothers: The Women Who Shaped the Presidents by Bonnie Angelo.
Biographical sketches of mothers credited with shaping the characters of eleven twentieth century United States presidents. Includes Mattie Truman, a Confederate who refused to sleep in Lincoln's bedroom; Dorothy Ford, who saved her infant son from an abusive father; and the flamboyant Virginia Clinton Kelley, whose "life was too much like a country song." Florence Harding: The First Lady, the Jazz Age and the Death of America’s Most Scandalous President by Carl Sferrazza Anthony.
In this biography, Florence Harding is portrayed as an immensely popular first lady. During the 1920s she championed women's rights, helped establish the Veterans Bureau, welcomed African American women to the White House, and was her husband's political partner. Lady Bird: A Biography of Mrs. Johnson by Jan Jarboe Russell.
Portrait of a first lady. Examines how marriage to Lyndon Baines Johnson defined her. Discusses Mrs. Johnson's family background and her roles as wife, mother, businesswoman, and conservationist. Also relates LBJ's marital infidelities and Lady Bird's reactions to them. RC 49783.
Mary Todd Lincoln by Jean H. Baker.
A scholarly, sympathetic account of the life of Mary Todd Lincoln. Born into a prominent Kentucky family, Mary never fully recovered from the insecurities caused by her mother's early death and an unloving stepmother. As first lady, Mrs. Lincoln sought to prove her worth by becoming a fashion queen and overtly influencing political appointments. After the death of her husband, her life continued its tragic descent to a public trial for insanity and institutionalization. RC 26662.

Presidential Wives by Paul F. Boller, Jr.
Capsule biographies and anecdotes that focus on the backgrounds, characters, outlooks, and personalities of the women the presidents married. Boller describes their public and private lives and tells how they understood the duties and responsibilities of the first lady. RC 27977.
