For those of us who own pets, there is nothing quite like that bond between human and animal. Whether it is mystery, humor, romance or remembrance you are after, we have books that feature animals. Here is just a sampling of what we have to offer, selected by Reader Advisor Suzy Higgins.
All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot.

The Case of the Hook-Billed Kites by J.S. Borthwick.
Amusing mystery set in a fictional wildlife refuge along the Rio Grande. Whatever Sara Deane, Bostonian graduate school student and non-birder, expected when she agreed to vacation with Philip Lentz, bird watcher extraordinaire, it was not murder. The Cat Who Ate Danish Modern by Lilian Jackson Braun.

The Cat Who Came for Christmas by Cleveland Amory.

The Cat Who Went to Paris by Peter Gethers.
Gethers, a publisher and screenwriter, hated cats before his girlfriend presented him with Norton, a small grey Scottish Fold kitten who takes over his life. Gethers recounts their adventures from vacations on Fire Island to business trips abroad. The cat makes friends with everyone--flight attendants, hotel managers, movie stars, and, finally, Janis Gethers’s true love, of whom Norton approves. The Cat series, book 1. RC 34131, BR 8854.
Catnap by Carol Nelson Douglas.
There has been a murder at the American Booksellers Association convention. Also, Baker and Taylor, the feline mascots of a book wholesaler, have been catnapped. Cat detective Midnight Louie pads stealthily through the aisles of the exhibit booths in search of clues. He teams up with human female Temple Barr, the convention's public relations officer, to bring the criminal to justice. Midnight Louie series, book 1. RC 36696.
Deadly Safari by Karin McQuillan.
Jazz Jaspar discovers that conducting safaris in Kenya means guiding and entertaining the customers, as well as keeping them alive when a murderer turns up in their midst. After a foray in the Rover to watch a lioness hunt, Boyce Darnell, a disagreeable guest, appears to be asleep in the front seat. Actually, he is dead. Inspector Omondi of the Nairobi police steps in, but there are more deaths before he and Jazz can solve the puzzle. RC 32361.
King of the Wind by Marguerite Henry.
The story of a magnificent Arabian stallion and the little mute stable boy who cares for him faithfully across the seas to England and France. When King Louis XV of France rejects the gift of this stallion, he does not know that the horse will become the founder of a strain of Throughbreds and ancestor of Man O' War. RC 16570, BR 9058.
Nine Lives to Murder by Marian Babson.
Leading Shakespearean actor Winstanley Fortescue awakens in great pain. Was it a heart attack or was he in an accident? As he cautiously stretches his limbs he gasps in horror to see paws: he has become the stage cat, Monty! Nop’s Trials by Donald McCaig.
Nop, a champion border collie, faces a new kind of trial when he is kidnapped. Behind the snatching is a jealous stockdog handler who begrudges the trophies and acclaim received by the dog's owner, Lewis Burkholder. RC 51205.
Old Yeller by Fred Gipson.
1860s Texas. Fourteen-year-old Travis at first resents the big, yellow stray dog that hangs around his home, but he comes to love and depend on him. With his father away on a cattle drive, Travis is the man of the house and looks to Old Yeller for help and protection. RC 47404, BR 7798.
Saratoga Fleshpot by Stephen Dobyns.
P.I. Charlie Bradshaw’s buddy Victor Plotz knows the colt Fleshpot is a ringer when it refuses to take the trademark nip at Vic’s backside. Then the inept man hired by legal enemies to shadow Vic turns up dead; Vic is accused; and the real Fleshpot has to be rescued. A mix of sleuthing and humor. Saratoga series, book 8. RC 43091.

A boy who is unhappy with his new stepfather discovers a half-starved German Shepherd and secretly keeps and cares for the dog. When his stepfather learns about it, he insists on trying to find the rightful owner. BR 820.
Some of My Friends Have Tails by Virginia McKenna.
An actress tells of the animals who have been her friends: snakes, dogs, otters, lions, rhinos, elephants, and deer. It is much more than an account of individual relationships with animals; it is also the author's views about the way man, the most selfish of all predators, has treated animals in the past. BR 1498.
Underdog by Laurien Berenson.
Melanie Travis is presented with a pedigreed poodle and enrolls the pup in Jenny Maguire's elite dog handling school. When Jenny loses her own dog, Ziggy, Melanie offers consolation. Watership Down by Richard Adams.

Wish You Were Here by Rita Mae Brown.
Harry Haristeen, the postmistress of a small Virginia town; her cat, Mrs. Murphy; and her dog, Tee Tucker, are alarmed when two townspeople are found brutally murdered after receiving anonymous postcards. The cat and dog, who prove more proficient at sleuthing than Harry, leave her enough clues to uncover the ingenious operation behind the murders. Strong language and some violence.
