Gothic romances are mysteries that often feature spirited young women, either governesses or new brides, who go to live in large gloomy mansions populated by strange servants and precocious children, and presided over by darkly handsome men with mysterious pasts. If you like books that are mysterious, romantic and sometimes a little scary, you might like these titles highlighted by Reader Advisor Cheryl Hassler.

Coil of Serpents by Anne Stevenson.
A clever, pretty young woman searches for her wandering stepfather in Italy. She thought her mission was accomplished when a somber young count led her to his family's medieval country home, where fear and curiosity drive her through a series of shattering chases. RC 11576.

The Crystal Cat by Velda Johnston.
In this gothic novel of terror, a woman is forced to confront her long-repressed feelings about her mother's death when she marries and returns to the small New England village of her youth. Linda Edwards fights to keep her spirits up but is overtaken by a sense of impending doom. RC 24387.

The Eagle at the Gate by Rona Randall.
A beautiful Edwardian actress, daughter of a matinee idol, grows weary of life with a troupe of traveling players and marries a dashing aristocrat. After the wedding his sudden, sadistic behavior exposes her to danger and a family secret. RC 12321.

The House of Kuragin by Constance Heaven.
Gothic set in 1820 near Saint Petersburg. A genteel, impoverished English woman accepts a position as teacher to the sickly but lovable child of a wealthy count, and falls in love with the count's younger brother. RC 11048, BR 1864.

House of Many Shadows by Barbara Michaels.
In a stately Bucks County mansion, the plucky heroine of this gothic witnesses frightening visions. A handsome cousin helps her to discover that the phenomena are not the result of her imagination, but are psychic manifestations of past events. RC 14281.

The Jade Dragon by Nancy Buckingham.
On visiting her mother's family at their baroque estate in Portugal, a genteel young English girl discovers many intrigues including a grandmother who sleepwalks, a precious jade dragon that has disappeared, and a coachman who withholds a secret. RC 11037.

Lady of Mallow by Dorothy Eden.
This is a Victorian romance in which the inheritance of a magnificent country estate, Mallow Hall, is contested. Sarah Mildmay, fiancée of the rightful owner, defies danger and masquerades as a governess in the home of the pretender. RC 11528.

The Long Masquerade by Madeleine Brent.
A nineteenth century romance takes its heroine from the aristocracy of colonial Jamaica to the gambling world of London. Young Emma Delaney marries the wealthiest man in Jamaica and learns on their honeymoon that her husband is depraved. Fleeing the island after his bizarre death, she escapes with a former servant in a small boat and begins a long, fearful masquerade. RC 18481.

Menfreya in the Morning by Victoria Holt.
A gothic novel set in Cornwall and London at the turn of the century. A poor little rich girl with one leg shorter than the other marries and moves to Menfreya, a fortress-like mansion on the Cornish coast, where mystery ensues. RC 19054.

Midsummer's Eve by Philippa Carr.
From the ancient manor of Cador, Annora witnesses some of the barbaric pre-Christian rituals of Midsummer's Eve, which the locals celebrate with ordeal by fire. She is shattered by her suspicion that one of the masked participants may be the neighboring lord, who has won her love but, she fears, might covet her estates. RC 24861.

Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart.
In an isolated chateau in the French Alps, Linda Martin, governess to the orphaned Comte de Valmy, discovers her pupil is the object of a murder plot involving his crippled uncle and the latter's son, whom Linda loves. RC 43401.

Radiance by Anne Maybury.
This is a gothic novel about a beautiful young model and representative of Contessa Regina Vivanesci's cosmetics firm. She eventually marries the Contessa's son, who is dominated by his mother. Asserting her independence, she becomes involved in a clash of wills with the Contessa, leading to a mysterious and perilous sequence of events. RC 13819, BR 4124.

Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier.
Rebecca, the glamorous mistress of a great English estate, died eight months before Maxim de Winter brought a young and frightened second wife to live there. Mystery, intrigue, and violence eventually reveal the circumstances surrounding Rebecca's death. RC 48914, BR 12354.

Sarsen Place by Gwendoline Butler.
A brainy governess seeks sanctuary in an elegant Oxford mansion known as Sarsen Place. She soon discovers that two women have been brutally murdered and her eleven-year-old charge, Alice, appears possessed. RC 8594.

Tower Abbey by Isabelle Holland.
At the urgent request of an old acquaintance, New York editor Candida Brown, with her many pets, reluctantly goes to Tower Abbey, a vast mansion overlooking the Hudson River. There she falls in love and attempts to break the spell of doom that haunts the place. RC 14485.

The Trembling Hills by Phyllis A. Whitney.
When a young woman comes to live in a San Francisco mansion in 1908 she is caught up in the romance and intrigue of the old house. RC 17045.

The Waiting Sands by Susan Howatch.
Rachel Lord senses impending disaster at a birthday celebration at Roshven. The setting is perfect for the dark, handsome Daniel Carey, who both attracts and frightens her. RC 16464, BR 2422.

Window on the Square by Phyllis Whitney.
Chilling tale of romance and terror unfolds when Meegan Kincaid is hired as companion to moody nine-year-old Jeremy. Meegan discovers that Jeremy is supposed to have shot his father and that his mother married the dead husband's brother. RC 12376.

The Winter Bride by Carola Salisbury.
Gothic romance tells of a young woman whose admiration for a distinguished poet leads her to accept a position as his secretary at the eerie castle Malmaynes. Despite a sense of foreboding, a tender romance blossoms between them. RC 12850.
