Heroes are men and women of great courage and achievement. Here is a list compiled by Reader Advisor Carol Mathews of books about some of these great individuals.
Air Force Heroes in Vietnam by Donald K. Schneider.
The stories of the twelve Air Force heroes who were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for action in Vietnam. Although three of the men died in the actions for which they were cited, their bravery and loyalty have ensured that their names will live in history. Beyond Glory: Medal of Honor Heroes in Their Own Words: Extraordinary Stories of Courage from World War II to Vietnam by Larry Smith.
Twenty-four recipients of the Medal of Honor recall the deeds and circumstances meriting their citations. Jack Jacobs of the 82nd Airborne during the Vietnam War describes his 1968 rescue actions while wounded and under fire as simply doing what he felt he had to do. Some strong language. RC 56848.
Beyond the River: The Untold Story of the Heroes of the Underground Railroad by Ann Hagedorn.
Portrait of Presbyterian minister John Rankin and his fellow abolitionists who ran the Underground Railroad of Ripley, Ohio, a town known to Kentucky slaveholders across the river as a haven for runaway slaves. Hagedorn chronicles their heroic efforts to liberate slaves and discusses the abolitionist movement. RC 57447.
Black Profiles in Courage: A Legacy of African American Achievement by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with Alan Steinberg.
Presents a historical gallery of heroes of African descent, recounting the stories of their contributions to the nation. The subjects include sixteenth century explorer Estevanico, Crispus Attucks at the Boston Massacre, and Rosa Parks, who valiantly kept her seat on a segregated bus in 1955. RC 44030.
Champs and Chumps: An Insider's Look at America's Sports Heroes by Glenn Dickey.
An all star, all sports lineup of people making sports history. Some of the personalities profiled include Joe Namath, Jimmy Connors, Evel Knievel, Muhammed Ali, and Billie Jean King. RC 13271.
The First Heroes: The Extraordinary Story of the Doolittle Raid--America's First World War II Victory by Craig Nelson.
Chronicles the first United States retaliatory attack on Japan following Pearl Harbor. Details the planning, training, execution, and aftermath of the daring mission of the Doolittle Raid, focusing on the heroes' personal experiences. Forgotten Heroes: Inspiring American Portraits from Our Leading Historians edited by Susan Ware.
Biographical essays of 35 unsung American heroes including fourteen women. Spanning the colonial era to the 1960s, covers sports figures, military greats, feminists, trailblazers, pioneers, teachers, and diplomats. RC 48138.
Heart of a Soldier: A Story of Love, Heroism, and September 11th by James B. Stewart.
Pulitzer Prize winning author relates the life of Rick Rescorla, security director of Morgan Stanley at New York's World Trade Center, who helped rescue thousands during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack before losing his life. His wife, Susan; army comrade Dan Hill; and his coworkers pay tribute to his courage. RC 55549.
Heroes without Glory: Some Good Men of the Old West by Jack Schaefer.
Pioneer doctors and Native American agents are some of the forgotten heroes of the West who, the author claims, were just as rugged, fast on the trigger, and interesting as the outlaws. RC 26276.
Hijacked: The True Story of the Heroes of Flight 705 by Dave Hirschman.
An account of the 1994 hijacking of a Fed Ex cargo jet by a disgruntled employee, who was flying as a passenger. Describes the tense moments when he attacked and seriously injured the flight crew, forcing them to take extreme measures to subdue their assailant and land the plane safely. Strong language and violence. RC 46714.
Idols of the Game: A Sporting History of the American Century by Robert Lipsyte and Peter Levine.
Profiles on sixteen sports heroes from the 1880s onward reflect the class, race, and gender ideals and barriers of sports and the rest of society. Beginning with boxer John L. Sullivan, whom the authors consider to be America's first great sports idol, the subjects include Babe Didrikson, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Michael Jordon. Invisible Giants: Fifty Americans Who Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books edited by Mark Carnes.
Fifty prominent authors of the late twentieth century, including Rita Dove, Stephen Sondheim, Camille Paglia, Walter Shapiro, and Gloria Steinem, select and introduce forgotten heroes from the 18,000 historical figures found in the American National Biography. Many cite personal favorites who inspired their careers or conduct. RC 56429.
Medal of Honor: Profiles of America's Military Heroes from the Civil War to the Present by Allen Mikaelian.
Biographical sketches of war heroes who have received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the ultimate award for American combatants. A brief history of the medal explaining its Civil War origins is followed by eleven profiles of recipients, both legendary and little known, through the Vietnam War. RC 54339.
Once They Heard the Cheers by W. C. Heinz.
A look at the sports heroes of yesterday as they are after their sports careers. Includes boxers Floyd Patterson, Willie Pep, Sugar Ray Robinson; bronco busters Jim Teacher and Freckles Brown; baseball's Joe Paige and Pete Reiser; and football's Willie Davis. The happiest story is the one of boxer Rocky Graziano, a television celebrity and a millionaire, while the saddest tale is that of fighter Beau Jack, who shines shoes for a living. RC 14371.
The Righteous: The Unsung Heroes of the Holocaust by Martin Gilbert.
British historian portrays non-Jews who saved Jewish lives during World War II. Drawing on his research, Gilbert honors the hundreds of courageous people throughout Europe who, often at great risk to themselves, deliberately chose to rescue fellow human beings from the evils of Nazism. RC 56237.
Sailors to the End: The Deadly Fire on the USS Forrestal and the Heroes Who Fought It by Gregory A. Freeman.
On July 29, 1967, off the coast of Vietnam an errant rocket on the U.S.S. Forrestal hits the plane piloted by future senator John McCain. Describes the crew's heroic efforts to save the ship (although 134 sailors died) and the reasons for the disaster. RC 55661.
Thinkers and Tinkers: Early American Men of Science by Silvio A. Bedini.
Survey of unsung heroes of American history, the relatively unknown inventors and scientists who made significant contributions to national life. Included in this volume are David Rittenhouse, who was the first to use spider silk for telescopic crosshairs; Andrew Ellicott, a surveyor who taught Meriwether Lewis the basics of that skill; Carl Menning; Enoch Long Jr.; and many others.
