Readers’ interest in horses, always high, has peaked with publication of the bestselling book (now made into a movie) about the thoroughbred Seabiscuit, in addition to horses pursuing the Triple Crown. For those readers who would like to go beyond Seabiscuit, Reader Advisor Ginny Ryan has some suggestions of other books on horses, fiction and nonfiction.

Clicker Training for Your Horse by Alexander Kurland.
In this in-depth companion to Clicker Training for Horses (RC 53871, BR 13944) an animal behaviorist explains how to use operant conditioning to train a horse to respond positively to a clicker. Offers detailed lesson plans covering problem solving, working with foals, loading a trailer, teaching manners, and riding. RC 53870, BR 13943.

The Dark Horse by Rumer Godden.
A magnificent thoroughbred racehorse with a poor record is escorted from London to Calcutta in the 1930s. Most of the people who surround the animal in India are, like him, outsiders in one way or another. A mean-spirited jockey from the horse’s past raises an unsporting mystery that only a neighboring nun can fathom. RC 17613.

Drum-Runnin’ Fool by Donna Alverson.
Gripping story of the rodeo world and the adventures of Anna Norman who becomes the owner of a prize winning quarter horse when her uncle falls seriously ill. Anna trains her horse to become the "finest, fastest drum runner ever." Some strong language. RC 10560.

Field of Thirteen by Dick Francis.
Mystery stories featuring horses and racetracks. Eight were previously published (most in the 1970s), and five are originals. In "Spring Fever," an older woman falls in love with her young jockey. In "Blind Chance," a blind boy picks up information about photo finishes and places his bets before the races are decided. Halley Fielding series. RC 47129.

The Great Black Jockeys by Edward Hotaling.
A social historian and Emmy winning writer recalls the importance of African American jockeys in the field of horse racing in the 1800s, even when many were slaves. Explains that by the end of the century, athletes who had once won the Kentucky Derby were vanishing from America's most popular sport because of racism. RC 50954.

Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley.
In two years on the horse racing circuit, anything can happen, both on and off the track. Smiley's kaleidoscopic novel recounts the lives of owners, trainers, jockeys, and others involved in the daily activities of owning, caring for, and racing horses. Explicit descriptions of sex and strong language. RC 49947.

The Horse Rider’s Handbook by Monty Mortimer.
The author, a competitor and trainer, covers both the psychology and physiology of the horse because he feels the reader must understand both in order to become a good rider with a well-trained horse. Beginning with the handling of the foal, the author covers the training of the young horse, as well as preparation for competition jumping, competition dressage, and cross-country riding. RC 31089.

The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans.
Thirteen-year-old Grace Maclean loses her leg when she and her horse, Pilgrim, are struck by a truck. Pilgrim is also injured, mentally and physically. Grace's mother, magazine editor Annie Graves, learns of a horse whisperer, Tom Booker, who might be able to restore Pilgrim. In hopes that he will also help Grace, Annie takes both of them to his ranch in Montana. Strong language, violence, and some explicit descriptions of sex. RC 41402, BR 11816.

Horses: Their Selection, Care, and Handling by Margaret Cabell Self.
Describes the more familiar breeds of horses found in this country, their characteristics, and their uses. Also discusses feeding, grooming, and general care of horses. RC 27744.

Horses and Horsemanship by M. Eugene Ensminger.
This guide to horses and horsemanship includes information on the horse industry including selecting and judging horses; types, classes, and breeds of horses; horsemanship; and the business aspects of horse production. Also includes a glossary of horse terms. RC 27633.

The Kentucky Derby: The First 100 Years by Peter Chew.
A staff writer with the National Observer, who has won awards for his articles on horse racing, offers a lively account of the colorful racers, riders, and owners who have participated in the famous annual race. RC 11378.

The Longest Shot: Lil E. Tee and the Kentucky Derby by John Eisenberg.
Recounts the upset victory of Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. Tells about the rags to riches colt with an inelegant name and a dime store pedigree, which surmounted chronic health problems and seventeen-to-one odds to capture the legendary crown. RC 43789.

The Man Who Listens to Horses by Monty Roberts.
A portrait of Monty Roberts, the horse trainer who discovered a humane technique for taming wild horses. Appalled by traditional methods of "breaking" horses that he witnessed in his youth, Roberts developed a gentle procedure for "joining-up" with a horse through a process of man-animal communication. Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand.
Recounts the rise of an "undersized, crooked-legged" thoroughbred horse who in 1938 was the year's number one newsmaker over Franklin Roosevelt, Hitler, and Lou Gehrig. Hillenbrand tells Seabiscuit's story through the three men who made a true long shot into a winner: owner Charles Howard, trainer Tom Smith, and jockey Red Pollard.  RC 51968, BR 14930 Also available as a descriptive video, DV 509.

Search for the Breed by Fred Grove.
Novel about horses and horse racing in the Old West includes the adventures of good looking, smooth talking Dude McQuinn; his sidekick, Coyote Walking; and Uncle Billy, a wizard with horses. A Dude McQuinn Western. RC 24843.

Shy Boy by Monty Roberts.
In this sequel to The Man Who Listens to Horses (RC 45002, BR 11288), horse trainer Monty Roberts captures a wild mustang and gently tames it to saddle. Wild about Horses: Our Timeless Passion for the Horse by Lawrence Scanlan.
The author explores why people are so enamored of horses. Uses history, mythology, and anecdotes to reveal how important the animal has been to the development of humans. Includes stories about horses in war, sports, and entertainment as well as horses as pets. RC 47930.

Wildfire by Zane Grey.
At eighteen, Lucy Bostil loves riding horses on her father's Colorado ranch more than anything else. She bonds with an untamed red stallion and Lin Slone, the injured man who was trying to break Wildfire. Lucy develops a scheme to race Wildfire against her father's favorite horse, Sage King.
