The Beatles Anthology.
Chronicle of the innovative English rock group comprised of Paul MacCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon, from their childhoods in Liverpool until their split in 1970. Based largely on a 1994 television documentary series, the book features interviews with the four musicians and their close associates. Some strong language. RC 50874, BR 12804.

California Dreamin': The True Story of the Mamas and the Papas by Michelle Phillips.
A founding member of the innovative rock group profiles its members and evokes the heady atmosphere of creativity and success. Phillips tells of her marriage at seventeen to John Phillips, the band's leader, and of the destructive lifestyle that characterized the West Coast music scene in the 1960s. Strong language and some descriptions of sex. BR 6920.

A Day in the Life: The Music and Artistry of the Beatles by Mark Hertsgaard.
Journalist Hertsgaard provides an in-depth look at the Beatles' music. At the Abbey Road Studios, he was permitted access to the raw tapes of recording sessions through which he heard songs evolve and the interplay of the musicians. To those insights he adds documented information about the Fab Four; he excludes the unverified hearsay of the time. Strong language and some descriptions of sex. RC 42327.

Dick Clark's The First 25 Years of Rock & Roll by Michael Uslan and Bruce Solomon.
This year by year scrapbook of rock and roll events from 1955 to 1980 includes articles about the major stars and groups of each year, from Little Richard to Janis Joplin to Bruce Springsteen. Much of the information was culled from the files of American Bandstand and from interviews with Dick Clark. RC 22627.

Elvis and Me by Priscilla Beaulieu Presley with Sandra Harmon.
Priscilla Presley describes her relationship with Elvis beginning with their first meeting in Germany when he was in the United States Army and she was fourteen years old. Some strong language and some descriptions of sex. RC 22974.


Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock and Roll, 1947-1977 by James Miller.
A chronicle of the major turning points in rock history from Wynonie Harris's record "Good Rockin' Tonight" in December 1947 to the death of Elvis Presley in August 1977. Discusses the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and many others. RC 50791.

Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga by Stephen Davis.
Follows members of the rock band Led Zeppelin from their early years with the sounds of Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Muddy Waters through their brief imitations of the Rolling Stones, the Animals, and the Beatles. Davis pieces together the deaths and tragedies, the energy, and the violence of a musical group that appeared to stand for a fast-and-free decade. Strong language and some descriptions of sex. Have Mercy! Confessions of the Original Rock 'n' Roll Animal by Wolfman Jack with Byron Laursen.
The man born Robert Smith describes his metamorphosis into Wolfman Jack as a disc jockey in Mexico in the nineteen sixties. His popularity extended to the United States, where over the years he rubbed shoulders with musicians such as Elvis Presley, the Temptations, John Lennon, and Chuck Berry and got to play himself in the movie American Graffiti. Strong language and some descriptions of sex. RC 42519.

Heroes and Villains: The True Story of the Beach Boys by Steven Gaines.
A devastating portrait of squandered talent and ruined Lives in the world of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. Gaines outlines how the Beach Boys wrote and sang about the California surf, blond women, and fast cars, but also lived a drug clouded nightmare. Strong language and some descriptions of sex. RC 26792.

I, Tina by Tina Turner, with Kurt Loder.
The fiery singer's autobiography is supplemented by reminiscences of family, friends, associates, and fellow travelers in the world of rock and rhythm and blues including her mentor and eventual nemesis, ex-husband Ike Turner. High powered and sexy, Tina achieved fame in the nineteen sixties. But her life with Ike became torturous and Tina left him in 1976, giving up her share of their joint assets. Overcoming her life with Ike, she made a very successful comeback that is also recounted. RC 25605.

It's Only Rock 'n' Roll: The Ultimate Guide to the Rolling Stones by James Karnbach and Carol Bernson.
The history of the English band presented as a chronology. The longest chapter is a complete listing of the group's tours and concerts from 1962 to 1998. Contains a sessionography and a discography of releases for the United States and the United Kingdom. Ends with a section on bootlegs. BR 11819.

The Life and Times of Little Richard: The Quasar of Rock by Charles White.
Biography of the original wild man of rock 'n' roll who reputedly altered the vocabulary of pop music. In this account the singer, who is now a preacher, confesses to homosexuality, voyeurism, participating in wild sexual orgies, and drug abuse. Some strong language and explicit descriptions of sex. RC 22861.

Light My Fire: My Life with the Doors by Ray Manzarek.
A member of the nineteen sixties  band The Doors recalls his childhood steeped in Chicago's jazz and blues. He recounts meeting Jim Morrison, forming the band, and achieving fame and notoriety. Manzarek notes that he regrets not intervening in Morrison's decadent lifestyle, which led to his death. Strong language and some explicit descriptions of sex. RC 47533.

Living with the Dead: Twenty Years on the Bus with Garcia and the Grateful Dead by Rock Scully with David Dalton.
An original manager of the Grateful Dead rock band reminisces about the group's evolution from folk revivalists to concert rockers. With humor and insight, he recreates twenty years of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and describes the various members of the Dead, primarily Jerry Garcia. Strong language. RC 43173.

Long Time Gone: The Autobiography of David Crosby by David Crosby and Carl Gottlieb.
Admitting that he was right in the middle of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, Crosby has written a very frank autobiography. The former superstar chronicles his dependency on drugs, his arrest, cold turkey detoxification, jail in Texas, and life after jail. Some strong language. RC 29254.

Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones by Quincy Jones.
Portrait of the award winning musician, composer, producer, and businessman who began his career at age eighteen playing backup for Billie Holiday in Seattle, then touring with Lionel Hampton's band. Incidents from Jones's career and family life are interspersed with commentary from his ex wives, children, and such old friends as Ray Charles. Strong language. RC 53304.

Rock 'n Roll Circus: The Illustrated Rock Concert by Mick Farren and George Snow.
A penetrating look at the illusive world of rock 'n' roll from behind the scenes, from out front, and in retrospect. Some strong language. RC 13752.

Stone Alone: The Story of a Rock 'n' Roll Band by Bill Wyman with Ray Coleman.
The Rolling Stone’s bass player has kept a scrapbook of press clippings and a diary for almost thirty years. Now he has trunk loads of these bits and pieces to jog his memory about the band's rise to stardom. Known as "the silent Stone," Wyman focuses on the nineteen sixties, when the band served its tumultuous apprenticeship, but he goes on to document the less than sanguine years that followed.
