September is Self Improvement Month, and what better way to observe it than with these books pertaining to ways you can improve your life? This list was compiled by Deborah Stroup, Wolfner Library's Coordinator of Volunteers.

Born to Win: Transactional Analysis with Gestalt Experiments by Muriel James.
Interpretation of transactional analysis and its application to the daily life of the average person. Case illustrations are drawn from the authors' experience as teachers and counselors. Dorothy Jongeward, joint author. BR 5344.

Bouncing Back from Injury: How to Take Charge of Your Recuperation by Karen Klein.
Covers the physical, emotional, social, and economic consequences of injury and presents the steps involved in dealing with it. The authors outline seven rules of recovery, offering advice on finding the right health care team and stressing the importance of filing forms for insurance and compensation. RC 29145.

Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes Are High by Kerry Patterson.
Teaches the skills required to master high stakes interactions both at home and at work. Uses anecdotes to describe how to stay focused, be persuasive, actively listen, and achieve action and results. RC 55247.

The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Creativity, Brilliance and Dreams by Debbie Ford.
A guidebook with exercises that encourages readers to uncover their shortcomings through a process of self discovery and transform them to hidden strengths. Ford maintains that most people try to mask the thoughts, feelings, and aspects of their behavior that they feel are socially unacceptable, rather than striving to develop harmonious self acceptance. The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Miguel Ruiz.
These four agreements, or steps, are based on the wisdom of the Toltec, a pre-Colombian society that embraced the spiritual knowledge and practices of their ancestors. Ruiz asserts that these four beliefs can guide one in developing a code of conduct that leads to personal freedom. RC 50851.

Get Strong! Body by Jake's Guide to Building Confidence, Muscles, and a Great Future for Teenage Guys by Jake Streinfeld.
Fitness trainer uses anecdotes from his own life to inspire teens to concentrate on improving their bodies as well as their social and inner lives. Explains how to take charge, set goals, realize one's dreams, and build values. Includes sample workout and diet. BR 14327.

Hope and Help for Your Nerves by Claire Weekes.
Presents a new method for treating fear and nervous illness to all who feel the effects of anxiety in their daily lives. RC 7868, BR 2106.

How to Get Whatever You Want out of Life by Joyce Brothers.
The well known psychologist and television personality tells how to achieve success in all areas of life: marriage, business, sports, money, politics, and sex. Using anecdotes from her own life, from her patients, and from celebrities she knows well, Brothers illustrates basic psychological principles and motivations. Some strong language. RC 13273.

I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It by Barbara Sher.
Sher offers practical advice and techniques for discovering one's true likes and aspirations and for overcoming common obstacles to finding and living the "good life." RC 43451, BR 10756.

Keep Trying: A Practical Book for the Handicapped, by a Polio Victim by Joseph Laurance Marx.
A positive work that proves how one can live a professionally, maritally, and socially full existence despite a crippling disability. Marx, who has played baseball and golf, asserts that "the more you do, the more you want to do." RC 7931.

Learning a Living: A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding a Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Dyslexia by Dale S. Brown.
The author of Job-hunting for the So-called Handicapped (RC 53895, BR 14098) offers advice on career planning. The author recommends researching educational and work opportunities and building social skills. RC 55089.

Life Makeovers: Fifty-Two Practical and Inspiring Ways to Improve Your Life One Week at a Time by Cheryl Richardson.
Author offers week by week suggestions for setting priorities, redefining success, and taking action to make necessary changes. Topics include financial, emotional, and physical adjustments that can lead to greater contentment and personal growth. Lists web sites, contacts, and additional resources. RC 52200.

Life Strategies by Phillip C. McGraw.
Behavioral scientist McGraw demonstrates how to take control over your life: assume responsibility for past actions, change bad habits, and reverse negative conditioning to prepare the mind and body for greater happiness. Describes ten "life laws" that improve the chances of success. RC 47962, BR 14289.

Man in Charge: The Executive's Guide to Grooming, Manners, and Travel by John Weitz.
Advice by a menswear designer on how to look and behave like an executive including: how to dress, how to travel and handle clients, appropriate gifts, and many other tips. RC 9524.

Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham.
A guide for managing individual strengths and building an effective organization, based on a study of individuals who have succeeded in their careers. "To excel in your chosen field and to find lasting satisfaction...suspend whatever interest you may have in weakness and instead explore...your strengths." RC 55450.

Oh No! Not Another Problem: A Practical Approach to Solve Day-to-Day Problems by Jeanette A. Griver and Michele W. Vodrey.
Authors advocate the use of "operational analysis", a formula designed to help people solve problems. Rather than looking at a situation in general terms, they suggest categorizing it in measurable dimensions: who, what, when, where, how, why, and costs. Provides a ten step guide to using this technique for troubleshooting. RC 52303, BR 13487.

A Passion for the Possible: A Guide to Realizing Your True Potential by Jean Houston.
Practical guide on heightening self awareness. Readers are escorted through the "four levels of being": sensory, psychological, mythic/symbolic, and spiritual. Based on a PBS program. RC 54578.

Patti's Pearls: Lessons in Living Genuinely, Joyfully, Generously by Patti LaBelle.
Noted rhythm-and-blues singer offers inspiration using anecdotes from her life to guide others to a more fulfilling existence. Includes her favorite "sentence sayings" passed down from generations and from the Bible. RC 54611.

Rejuvenate! (It's Never Too Late) by Eartha Kitt.
Award winning performer shares tips that have helped her maintain a vital mind and body. Recalling incidents from her 74 years of varied and vigorous experiences, Kitt discusses the benefits of deep breathing, exercise, sensible eating habits, and avoiding materialistic clutter. RC 52657.

Relationship Rescue by Phillip C. McGraw.
The author presents a plan for saving a marriage or other intimate partnership by taking personal responsibility for the situation. Lists ten "relationship myths," provides questionnaires and other tools to analyze problems, and suggests steps to achieve a balance and mutual respect. RC 49740, BR 14219.

Self Matters: Creating Your Life from the Inside Out by Phillip C. McGraw.
McGraw explores how to find one's "authentic self" via introspection and other key elements that will lead to a stronger self concept and self esteem. Some strong language. RC 54036, BR 14066.

A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quindlen.
Inspirational advice to find fulfillment in enjoying each moment of life. Words of wisdom spoken from the heart by a bestselling author. RC 51407.

Starting from Scratch: A Different Kind of Writers' Manual by Rita Mae Brown.
The best selling author offers an account of her early life, advice on good health habits, and financial advice, along with the usual topics for such manuals, like dialogue and plot development. Also included is an annotated list of English works that the author considers basic to a writer's education. RC 27366, BR 7300.

Stress without Distress by Hans Selye.
A researcher who holds doctorates in medicine, science, and philosophy tells how to achieve a rewarding lifestyle in harmony with the laws of nature by using stress as a positive force for personal achievement and happiness. RC 8659.

Take Charge: A Strategic Guide for Blind Job Seekers by Rami Rabby and Diane L. Croft.
A practical self help guide based on the real life experiences of blind job seekers. Peppered throughout the book are strategies used by successfully employed blind people. Find out how they did it, and how you can too. BR 50339.

What Time Is It? You Mean Now? Advice for Life from the Zennest Master of Them All by Yogi Berra.
Retired baseball champion offers advice by using anecdotes relating to baseball. Suggests cultivating a positive attitude, exercising, setting goals, and taking advantage of opportunities. RC 55645, BR 14563.

Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want by Barbara Sher.
Achieving success does not require drastic character changes, according to Sher, founder of a self help system called Success Teams Seminars. Instead, she advocates rediscovering one's childhood self and interests and prescribes a form of organized daydreaming designed to define one's true goals. RC 14031, BR 4309.
