The following titles were the top bestsellers for the year 2000 from Barnes and Noble. It is a good mixture of fiction and nonfiction. The list is compiled by Public Services Librarian, Debbie Musselman.

  2. Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson.

    Physical fitness trainer offers a program for transforming your body in just twelve weeks, without turning your life upside down. Phillips suggests his plan can lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart trouble even after years of physical neglect. Includes exercises and diet information plus testimonials from participants in the program.

  7. The Brethren by John Grisham.

    In a federal penitentiary in Florida , three former judges known as the Brethren hold court. Besides handling inmate disputes and appeals, they have devised a scheme to blackmail men on the outside. But when one of their targets turns out to be a CIA financed candidate for president, they find themselves in hot water.

    The author refers to the type of person who puts mind over heart as a "five-sensory human," one less open to intuitive thinking. And he contrasts this type with the "multisensory" individual, who seeks fulfillment in spirituality. Using such notions as karma, intuition, and trust, Zukav attempts to describe the spiritual evolution of the human species, although he says an adequate vocabulary has not yet emerged for this purpose.

  12. While I Was Gone by Sue Miller.

    Veterinarian Jo Becker is happy with her second husband and devoted to their three daughters. But after years of marriage, she feels a sense of dissatisfaction creeping into her life. When a sick dog belonging to an old housemate, Eli Mayhew, is brought to her office, painful memories surface.

  13. Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.

    Investor describes how he learned about money from his PhD father, who could never retain wealth, and also from his friend's father, who was a millionaire with an eighth grade education. Explains how to make your money work for you by mastering financial literacy and taking charge.

  14. Eating Well for Optimum Health by Andrew Weil.

    Dr. Weil critiques low fat and low carbohydrate diet trends and provides his own nutritional guidelines. Unwilling to sacrifice the pleasure of eating, he offers recipes for "healthful and delicious" dishes.

  15. Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.
    RC 44849, BR 12800.
    Some twenty years after college, Mitch Albom rekindles his relationship with a former professor who is terminally ill. His weekly visits with his dying mentor become a colloquium on the meaning of life, and Albom gains insight into "love, work, community, family, aging, forgiveness, and, finally, death."
