The following titles are the top bestsellers for the year 2003 from Barnes and Noble. It is a good mixture of fiction and nonfiction. The list is compiled by Administrative Program Coordinator Debbie Musselman.

  1. Angels and Demons by Dan Brown.

    Professor of religious iconology Robert Langdon is called to the Vatican to investigate the murder of a physicist by the brotherhood of the Illuminati, a secret medieval society. Joining Langdon is the victim's beautiful daughter, Vittoria, and scientists from CERN, a Swedish research facility. Some violence and some strong language.

  2. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown.

    Professor Robert Langdon investigates the crime scene of the Louvre's murdered curator. Joining him is French cryptologist Sophie Neveu. The clues left behind pit two Catholic societies against each other in search of the Holy Grail. Some violence and some strong language.

  3. Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution by Robert C. Atkins.

    Proposes a holistic approach to weight loss through altering the body's metabolism with a regimen high in proteins and low in carbohydrates. Outlines a four stage program using diet, exercise, and vitamin therapy to combat obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.

  4. The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.

    Eddie spends his last hours on earth in his usual way, maintaining the Ruby Pier amusement park rides. But something goes wrong, and Eddie dies on his eighty-third birthday while trying to save a little girl. In heaven he meets five people who explain his life to him.

  5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling.

    Christian minister provides a guide to a forty day spiritual journey to help readers discover the answer to one of life's most important questions: What on earth am I here for? Uses biblical references and describes the benefits of changing one's perspective.

  8. Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand.

    Recounts the rise of an "undersized, crooked-legged" thoroughbred horse who in 1938 was the year's top newsmaker over Franklin Roosevelt, Hitler, and Lou Gehrig. Hillenbrand tells Seabiscuit's story through the three men who made a true long shot into a winner: owner Charles Howard, trainer Tom Smith, and jockey Red Pollard.   9. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

    South Carolina, 1964. Fourteen-year-old Lily rescues her African American housekeeper, and substitute mother, Rosaleen, from the hospital. Rosaleen had been beaten for trying to register to vote. They flee to a safe place where Lily's battered late mother had also fled, a beekeeping operation run by three black sisters. Some strong language.

  10. The South Beach Diet by Arthur Agatston.

    Description of a three phase program developed by a Florida cardiologist to help his overweight patients. The plan involves eating the right carbohydrates and the right fats in order to correct the way the body reacts to foods that previously caused weight problems. Includes suggested menus and recipes.
