Baker's Hawk by Jack Bickham.
A secret and close friendship arises between 11-year-old Billy Baker and an old mountain man when Billy rescues a baby hawk from a raging fox. RC 16093.

Buck Colter by Matt Braun.
Buck Colter, son of a white mountain man and a Cheyenne woman, was raised in an Indian village. When An-zah-ti (Buck's Cheyenne name) was eight, soldiers attacked the village and raped and killed his mother. Buck, now grown, has vowed to kill Colonel John Covington, the commander of the murdering soldiers. Some strong language and some descriptions of sex. RC 35024.

The Colorado by Gary McCarthy.
Isaac Beard works for his father-in-law in St. Louis until the day mountain man Jim Savage comes to town. Following a series of unfortunate incidents, Isaac and Jim set out for the Colorado Grand River, where they plan to become rich trapping beaver. It is more than a year before Isaac returns to St. Louis to claim his family. But things have changed, and it is a different family that makes a home along the Colorado. Rivers West series, book 3. Death of an Eagle by Kirby Jonas.
Mauled by a grizzly, sixteen-year-old José Olano's chances are slim until Robert "Gray Eagle" McAllister, an embittered outlaw, happens by. McAllister nurses the Spanish boy back to health and teaches him the secrets of mountain men. Their friendship follows José into adulthood, when he is forced to choose between loyalty and justice. Entrepreneurs of the Old West by David Dary.
A history of the nineteenth-century entrepreneurs who sought adventure and wealth on the American frontier. Relates the adventures as well as the business practices of the largely unknown and unsung trappers, traders, wagon freighters, merchants, cattlemen, railroaders, land promoters, and other early capitalists who contributed so much to the taming of the Old West. RC 25005.

Exploring the West by Herman J. Viola.
The story of nineteenth-century pioneers who blazed trails across the West: surveyors, scientists, mountain men, fur trappers, engineers, artists, settlers, and many more. Tells the stories of men such as Kit Carson, Zebulon Pike, and John C. Fremont, and about the expeditions, railroads, gold rush, and Indians that were all part of the exploration of the West. Jedediah Smith and the Opening of the West by Dale Lowell Morgan.
Smith was one of the reckless breed of mountain men who dared to explore the Rocky Mountains and beyond. A modest, intelligent, and religious man, after eight years of hunting and trading, he set out for the Santa Fe Trail. RC 10060.

Mountain Man by Vardis Fisher.
A fur trapper in the Rocky Mountains during the 1830s befriends a woman whose children have been slaughtered by Indians. When his wife and unborn child are killed, the trapper declares a one-man war against the tribe. Some violence. RC 44306.

Mountain Men on the Santa Fe Trail by Jess McCreede.
When the beaver trade dries up, trapper Zack McClendon suggests to his partner that they become traders on the Santa Fe Trail. They know the dangers they face from the bands of angry Indians, but they are unaware that traders are being killed by Mexican soldiers. Violence. RC 39780.

The Oregon Trail: An American Saga by David Dary.
Author of The Santa Fe Trail (RC 53106) chronicles the history of the 2,000-mile route linking Missouri to Oregon used primarily from the 1840s to 1869, when the transcontinental railroad was completed. Recreates experiences of explorers, Indians, fur traders, immigrants, missionaries, mountain men, and pioneers who traversed the trail. RC 60598.

Prescott's Trail by Clifton G. Wisler.
The rugged trail scout and trapper, Tom "Three Fingers" Shea, had promised years before to teach young Darby Prescott the ways of the mountain man. And even though the Big Horns is a cold, hard country, Prescott was ready to face it head-on, or die in the attempt! RC 32582.

The Shadow Man by F.M. Parker.
A tale of the Southwest in the 1840s. Jacob Tamarron is tired of the solitary life he has led as a mountain man and wants to start over. He marries Petra, a proud and fiery Mexican woman, and becomes a respected member of her family. But when a band of outlaws slays some of the family and wounds Petra, Jacob sets out to seek revenge, turning hunter again--this time for human prey. Some strong language. RC 30017.
