World Fantasy Awards

Each year in a different city, authors, artists, editors, and fans of fantasy art and literature gather for the World Fantasy Convention. For four days, they participate in discussion panels, art shows, autograph sessions, and the awards banquet. Members registered for the yearly convention vote on nominees for outstanding works of fantasy, and a panel of judges chooses the winners. The following novels from the Wolfner Library collection have each won a World Fantasy Award.

1976 winner:

Bid Time Return by Richard Matheson.
Richard Collier, a young man dying of a brain tumor, falls in love with a photograph of Elise McKenna, an actress who lived at the turn of the century. He travels back in time to meet her, and what follows is a fantastic love story that transcends time. BR 2964.

1977 winner:

Doctor Rat by William Kotzwinkle.
Inventive comic fable in which plucky, fanatical Doctor Rat dedicates his life to protecting mankind from the worldwide mobilization of the ungrateful animal kingdom. Strong language. RC 15309.

1978 winner:

Our Lady of Darkness by Fritz Leiber.
A young San Francisco writer becomes the victim of "paramental entities" that embody the evil of the entire city. When the writer accidentally discovers the existence of these forces, they pursue him relentlessly until he finally confronts the most potent force of all, Our Lady of Darkness. Some strong language. RC 13761.

1980 winner:

Watchtower by Elizabeth Lynn.
Tornor Keep is the legendary tower that guards the winter end of a summer land. But when Tornor is overrun by raiders, a young prince is the tower’s last hope in an enchanting story of a time far removed from ours and of a land alive with warriors, lovers, war, and honor. WOC 457.

1981 winner:

The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe.
Severian, a young journeyman of the torturers' guild, violates his oath of duty by allowing one of his victims to commit suicide. He is expelled from the guild and begins a long quest across a decadent, far-future Earth. Book of the New Sun, Book 1. Series Code BNS. RC 17422.

1982 winner:

Little, Big by John Crowley.
Poignant, adult fairy tale that begins in the 1880s on the imaginary estate of eccentric Victorian architect John Drinkwater. One day, attending a lecture on the supernatural, he is mesmerized by a young woman, Violet Bramble, who is said to have access to "other" worlds. This story tells of their marriage and chronicles five generations of their family: a clan of mystics, fortune tellers, fairies, and gnomes. Some descriptions of sex. RC 18485.

1984 winner:

The Dragon Waiting by John M. Ford.
A historical fantasy. In 1478, at the time of the Renaissance, a Welsh wizard, a noble Greek mercenary, a woman doctor from the court of the Medici, and a German vampire, who is a munitions expert, join forces to bring Richard III to the throne. RC 23678, BR 5714.

1985 winner:

Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart.
This fable of witty adventure takes place in an imagined China of the seventh century. Two companions set out on a legendary journey in search of the Great Root of Power, which alone can release the enchanted children caught in a drugged slumber. Ancient and Imaginary China, Book 1. Series Code CHI. Some strong language and some descriptions of sex. RC 30657, BR 5969.

1985 winner:

Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock.
The Huxley family lives on the edge of Ryhope Wood, a forest in a remote corner of Britain. One by one, the Huxley men are drawn into the wild, primitive life of Ryhope Wood. They are lured by their curiosity, by the beauty of one of the mythical beings living there, and by their lust for power over the beast-like humans who inhabit the wood. Mythago Cycle, Book 1. 1987 winner:

Perfume by Patrick Suskind.
A bizarre tale set in eighteenth century France. Orphaned Jean-Baptiste has an extraordinarily developed sense of smell, but he is haunted by the fact that his body has no scent of its own. His talents ingratiate him with a French perfumer, and eventually, he becomes an olfactory vampire who steals the scent of luscious girls. Some violence and some descriptions of sex. 1988 winner:

Replay by Ken Grimwood.
Part fantasy and part nightmare, this intriguing novel recounts the story of a man and a woman mysteriously given the ability to live their lives over. Each dies in 1988, only to awaken as a teenager in 1963 with adult knowledge and wisdom intact. Different spouses, lovers, children, and careers await them in each go-round of the past 25 years with altered versions of world events. Strong language and explicit descriptions of sex. RC 25896.

1989 winner:

Koko by Peter Straub.
A thriller about Vietnam veterans: Beevers, an arrogant lawyer; Puma, a kindly restaurateur; and Poole, a pediatrician. They gather at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington and plan to find and bring home fellow veteran Tim Underhill, who they are sure is "Koko," a serial killer ravaging Southeast Asia. Strong language and explicit descriptions of sex. RC 28035.

1990 winner:

Madouc by Jack Vance.
Princess Madouc is now nine, and King Casmir of Lyonesse wants to find her a husband. But Madouc only wishes to search for her true mother, having recently learned that Suldrun is not her mother and King Casmir is not her grandfather. Meanwhile, King Casmir learns of the prophecy that Prince Dhrun, the son of King Aillas, is to become head of all the Elder Isles. Lyonesse, Book 3. Series Code LYO. Some violence. RC 39552.

1991 winner:

Only Begotten Daughter by James Morrow.
Celibate, eccentric Murray Katz is informed that one of his monthly sperm donations contains a fertilized egg. Fearing for the baby's life, Murray steals the artificial uterus containing the egg and raises the child he names Julie. When it becomes obvious that Julie is the second child of God, she questions God's actions. A visit to hell and conversations with her brother help Julie accept her identity. Some strong language. RC 33800.

1991 winner:

Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner.
Long ago, Thomas was abducted by the queen of Elfland, and has lived in her magic kingdom without growing old. When he returns to the world where time passes, he is forced to find a way to begin his life anew. The queen's parting gift to Thomas was that he would be able to tell only the truth. It is an admirable trait, but one sure to create problems. RC 32778.

1992 winner:

Boy’s Life by Robert R. McCammon.
Cory and his father, Tom, are making milk deliveries in 1964 Zephyr, Alabama, when a car speeds past them, hurtles down an embankment, and plunges into a lake. Tom immediately leaps into the lake, hoping to save the driver. But it is too late because the man was murdered. As Cory and his father seek answers to the killing of the unknown man, Cory finds himself in a world of adult evils. Violence and strong language. RC 33904.

1993 winner:

Last Call by Tim Powers.
Las Vegas ' Flamingo Hotel, built by Bugsy Siegel in 1946, appears to be the manifestation of the tower in a tarot card deck. When it was built, Siegel was the reigning Fisher King. His power was assumed by Georges Leon, who is now attempting to assure his own immortality by assuming the spirit of his son Scott. Scott, an alcoholic poker player, now finds himself in mortal combat with his father. Violence, strong language, and descriptions of sex. RC 39302, BR 9436.

1995 winner:

Towing Jehovah by James Morrow.
God has died and fallen into the sea. With that news, sea captain Anthony Van Horne is recruited by a grieving Archangel Raphael to tow God's colossal corpse to a remote Arctic cave for burial. As Van Horne pursues the mission with his motley crew, he confronts a series of setbacks that satirize aspects of modern society. Strong language and descriptions of sex. RC 43408.

1996 winner:

The Prestige by Christopher Priest.
In 1878, a renowned magician interrupts a competitor's seance to expose it as a fraud. The incident turns tragic, with each man vowing to destroy the other. Their rivalry continues throughout their careers, ultimately leading to a catastrophe that resounds for generations. Violence. RC 44253.

1999 winner:

The Antelope Wife by Louise Erdrich.
Episodes from the lives and dreams of two mixed blood Native American families, the Roys and Shawanos. Klaus Shawano is forewarned about women who lived with antelope and how men that love these women can lose their minds. But he captures one anyway with strips of sweetheart calico, and she does indeed drive him to despair. Some descriptions of sex and some violence. RC 46741.

2002 winner:

The Other Wind by Ursula K. LeGuin.
Alder, a sorcerer, has been having terrible dreams since the death of his wife, Lily. He sees her and others reaching out to him. His dreams will lead to the transformation of Earthsea. Earthsea series, Book 5. Series Code ERS. RC 53745, BR 13813.

2003 winner:

Ombria in Shadow by Patricia A. McKillip.
The death of the prince of Ombria forces a power struggle. The prince named his young son as his successor, but his evil aunt Domina Pearl becomes the boy's regent. The prince's former mistress, the prince's nephew, and a sorceress join together to fight the oncoming darkness. RC 54915.

2004 winner:

Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton.
A tale of love, money, and dynastic intrigue--among dragons. When patriarch Bon Agornin dies, his heirs maneuver for position and power within the family. At the customary eating of the deceased, Bon's greedy son-in-law consumes more than his share, sparking a series of unexpected calamities. BR 16100.

2005 winner:

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke.
In the early 1800s, with England embroiled in the Napoleonic Wars, Norrell reveals his skills as a practicing magician. Novice Jonathan Strange becomes Norrell's pupil and takes up England's cause on the battlefield. As Strange's powers grow, so does his obsession with the ancient, magical Raven King. RC 58885.
