Episodes were selected by Bernard Lenrow, an avid reader of mysteries. Lenrow also introduced each episode as criminologist Geoffrey Barnes. It featured the writings of established authors such as Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, but also provided opportunities for new writers to have their works produced.
