Service Options for Schools
Wolfner Library uses KLAS (Keystone Library Automation Systems) software to maintain its patron records and to control the circulation of library materials and equipment. This software was designed to provide very personalized service to individuals, but it can also be used to provide a more “tailor-made” service to your school, with some slight limitations. The following information is provided to help you make an informed decision when selecting service options for your school. If you have any questions, contact the Youth Services Librarian by calling toll-free 800-392-2614 or by e-mailing nancy.doering@sos.mo.gov
Book Selection Options
There are three options for book selection. Choose ONE for each book format you need.
-
On Demand
School personnel request specific titles, authors, or subjects as needed. They may make requests by contacting the Youth Services Librarian via the toll-free number, e-mail, fax, or surface mail. Available books are usually mailed the next business day.
This is the best option for the school that wants the library to send only the authors, titles, and/or subjects that the school needs at the time the books are needed.
This is also the best option for the school with eligible students who are at very different reading levels and have different curriculum needs.
-
Automatic Computer Selection Service
This option is for the school that does not have particular title requests, but would like to receive a variety of books from which eligible students can choose. The school specifies the grade level, the time interval, and the number of books per time interval. (For grade level and time interval options, see below.) The computer automatically selects books from the library’s collection according to the school’s profile and mails them. The school does not need to call the library once the profile is set unless profile changes are needed.
NOTE: This option will only work if all the students needing service in a single school are at approximately the same reading level.
ALSO NOTE: At any time the school may request a specific title, author, or subject in addition to the books being selected by the computer.
-
Automatic Request List Service
This option is for the school that wants to give the library a list of specific titles for eligible students to read throughout the year. The school can choose to have the library send a set number of books at a regular time interval chosen by the school (see options below). For example, two books from the school’s request list every week.
Books can be added to the request list throughout the year, but the computer always makes random selections based on availability. It cannot prioritize books.
NOTE: This option works only if all the eligible students are reading from the same list and if they do not need to read the books in any particular sequence.
ALSO NOTE: At any time the school may request a specific title, author, or subject in addition to the books being selected automatically from the request list at regular intervals.
Book Format Options
Wolfner Library offers three book formats: 4-track recorded cassette (RC), braille (BR), and large print (LP). The recorded cassette collection is the largest and has the greatest number of volumes and titles. The braille collection is next largest, and the large print collection is small, but growing. Your school may choose to borrow any or all of the formats.
NOTE: Your school maychoose a different book selection option (as described above) for each format borrowed, or the same book selection option for all formats.
BUT ALSO NOTE: You cannot choose a different grade level for each format. The computer software does not offer that option. If you are choosing an automatic book selection option, all books must be at the same grade level regardless of format.
Time Interval Options
If you choose automatic computer selection service or automatic request list service for any of the book formats, you must choose one of the following time intervals for each format you need so the computer knows how often to send each book format. You may request a different time interval for each book format.
The time intervals are:
- Weekly (once per week)
- Bimonthly (twice per month)
- Monthly (once per month)
Grade Level Choices
The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), our parent agency, supplies the equipment and most of the recorded and braille books in our collection. NLS assigns one grade level code to each book. The grade level codes are broad, and they overlap. The computer software was designed for the NLS grade codes. The grade codes cannot be changed, so do not request something different.
Remember: With automatic book selection, you cannot request a different grade level for each book format. All book formats must be at the same grade level. If your eligible students are reading at vastly different grade levels, on demand service is the best service option for your school.
The grade levels are:
- Preschool through second grade
- Kindergarten through third grade
- Second grade through fourth grade
- Third grade through sixth grade
- Fourth grade through seventh grade
- Fifth grade through eighth grade
- Sixth grade through ninth grade
- Junior and senior high reading level
- Senior high school
- High school and adult reading level
