Wolfner Library Director, Richard Smith and Administrative Program Coordinator, Debbie Musselman giving a WolfPAC demonstration at John Knox Village retirement community.
Wolfner staff visited twelve partners statewide to demonstrate WolfPAC, our online public access catalog available over the Internet. One hundred and thirty-eight recipients of Wolfner services were at the sessions. Training topics included how to order books directly over the Internet; how to search through Wolfner’s collection of 60,000 titles by author, subject, and title; and how to check patron information for accuracy. Wolfner staff Richard Smith, Debbie Musselman, Cheryl Hassler, Nancy Doering, Deborah Stroup, and Paul Mathews were pleased with the turnout at the demonstrations and feel we learned as much, if not more, from doing them as those attending.

Wolfner Advisory Council

The reconstituted Wolfner Advisory Council met on November 21, 2003. Dan Ross, Executive Deputy Secretary of State, and Richard Smith, Wolfner Director, presented an overview of Wolfner Services. Via conference call, Steve Prine of the National Library Service gave new members a summary of the national library program of braille and recorded materials. The meeting concluded with a tour of Wolfner Library.

Appointees to the council are:

Personnel Change

Congratulations to Lisa Sanning on the arrival of a new baby girl, Aubrey Lee, on September 14, 2003. Unfortunately for Wolfner, Lisa resigned as Reference Librarian in order to spend time with her family. Lisa worked diligently for Wolfner patrons in her nine years of service. We wish Lisa good luck in all of her future endeavors.

Wolfner Library would like to welcome our new Special Services Librarian, Beth Duckworth. Beth is the former Director of the Farmington Public Library and has recently relocated to Mid-Missouri. In addition to working as a librarian in Farmington, she was an adjunct English instructor at Mineral Area College. Our new librarian is looking forward to meeting and working with the patrons of Wolfner, and we are looking forward to the contributions she will make to our system.

There's also been a change in the front office. You may now hear the voice of Brandon Kempf when you call Wolfner. Brandon is the new general office assistant. He transferred from the circulation department.

NFB-Newsline® News

In addition to The Christian Science Monitor and approximately 95 newspapers, NFB-Newsline will be adding The New Yorker and The Economist to their list of available materials. The New Yorker covers subjects ranging from fashion to fiction, politics to poetry, and science to sitcoms. (The New Yorker will still be available in cassette format through Wolfner Library.) The Economist provides insight and opinion on international news, world politics, business, finance, science and technology, and cultural trends. NFB-Newsline anticipates the magazines will be available in 2004. Current subscribers to NFB-Newsline will be able to access these items with their user identification and security codes. If you have not subscribed to NFB-Newsline, but would like to sign up for the service, contact your Reader Advisor at 1-800-392-2614.

About the Narrator web site

In response to patron requests, NLS has created a Web site http://www.loc.gov/nls/narrators/ where the public can learn more about program narrators. Each narrator may decide whether to provide information. So far, narrators working at the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) studio and at the NLS studio have provided information, including an audio sample of material that is not copyrighted. As narrators at other studios make information available, NLS will include links to those studios' web sites.

Magazine Corner

Wolfner Library is pleased to announce the availability of Wild West, a magazine featuring articles on the arts, culture, history, and personalities of the Old West. Wild West is available in cassette format.

Wolfner Library has the following sports schedules available in braille: American Baseball League, National Baseball League, National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League, and Women's National Basketball Association.
If you would like to receive Wild West or any of the sports schedules, please contact your Reader Advisor at 1-800-392-2614.

Regional Web-Braille Magazines

The next time you visit the Library of Congress web site listing of Web-Braille magazines, look at the end of the 29 titles offered by NLS and then past the sport schedules. There you will find a new section created by Judy Dixon, called "Magazines Produced by Regional Libraries." Wolfner Library is the first regional library with a magazine on the site. The Missouri Conservationist is now available nationwide in Web-Braille.

Renew Your Magazine Subscription

Patrons who have a subscription to Reader's Digest and/or Newsweek will receive a Renewal Notice from American Printing House for the Blind. Some patrons are confused because the form lists the cost of the subscription and asks for a donation to help defer the cost. You are not required to donate any money in order to continue your subscriptions. You must return this form so that your magazines will continue coming.

Music Services

Persons interested in music materials may receive them directly from the Music Section of NLS. The collection consists of scores in braille and large print; textbooks and books about music in braille and large print; music appreciation cassettes, including interviews and opera lectures; and self-instructional cassettes for voice, piano, organ, electronic keyboard, guitar, recorder, accordion, banjo, harmonica, and other instruments. Braille scores and books are also available on the Internet through Web-Braille. Please send a message via e-mail to nls@loc.gov or call (202) 707-5100, toll-free 1-800-424-8567, to sign up for the music services.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Wolfner Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH) is to provide informational and recreational books and magazines on cassette, on record, and in braille formats free-of-charge to Missourians who are unable to use standard print materials due to a physical disability and to provide disability-related information to the public. Wolfner Library is part of the National Library Service (NLS) national network of cooperative libraries. The purpose of the network is to make recorded and braille books and magazines available in a manner which is both accessible and convenient for the readers who use the library. Therefore, circulation is done through the mail. You may request a cassette or braille copy of this manual or an application for service by calling Wolfner Library at (800) 392-2614 or (573) 751-8720. A copy of the application is also available on our website: http://www.sos.mo.gov/wolfner.

A Brief History

Before 1924, the St. Louis Public Library loaned braille books to the adult blind. In 1931, Congress passed the Pratt-Smoot Act, and eighteen (18) regional libraries, including the St. Louis library, were selected to become the National Library Service for the Blind. In 1937, private citizens raised funds for a building, which was dedicated in memory of Dr. Henry L. Wolfner, a noted St. Louis eye specialist. In 1977, Wolfner Library became a division of the Missouri State Library. Wolfner Library is under the administration of the Secretary of State, the Missouri State Librarian, and the Director of Wolfner Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.

In the ensuing years, additional federal laws broadened the eligibility for the library to include children and people who had physical disabilities. The book and magazine collections were made more accessible by providing materials not only in braille but also on record and on cassette. To assist readers in reading the "talking" (recorded) books, Wolfner Library loaned playback machines at no charge.

E-Mail with Wolfner

Wolfner@sos.mo.gov is Wolfner Library’s new e-mail address. As electronic communication between Wolfner staff and recipients of our services continue to increase, please use appropriate subject headings such as “Book Order” or “Address Change” when sending e-mail. Our parent agency, the Office of the Secretary of State, has firewalls that reject many messages that might contain a virus, and Wolfner staff is instructed to delete any questionable e-mails.

Braille Books

Suzy Higgins has sent out 79 letters and made 149 phone calls asking for the return of braille books that have been overdue for more than one year. This is down 35% from last year; however, we would like to do better. We do ask our braille readers to pay close attention to the six-week loan period. Wolfner has a limited number of braille books that others may be waiting to read.

Friends of Wolfner Library

The annual meeting of the Friends of Wolfner Library will be held in Jefferson City at the Kirkpatrick Information Center 600 West Main on Saturday, April 24th from 1 to 4 pm. The Friends are arranging a guest speaker to talk on the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial.
