The M. S. U. Independent was an early newspaper in Columbia, Missouri issued by students of the University of Missouri (March 1894-Dec. 1895, by a society known as the M. S. U. Barb). It was named M. S. U. independent from March 3, 1894 to May 27, 1904 and later named The Independent. This collection covers March 3, 1894-May 27, 1905 with some issues missing.

The Model Rural School photograph collection contains images from the Model Rural School located at the First District Normal School (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, MO. It was the brainchild of former Normal School president, John R. Kirk. He designed his notion of the ideal rural schoolhouse, advocated for its building in 1907, and implemented a new curriculum to provide a better education for county children so they could serve the unique needs of their communities. These images show various classroom activities and school furnishings.
