September is Library Card Sign-Up Month — State Workers and All Missourians Encouraged to Get Their Card
Secretary of State Denny Hoskins and the Missouri State Library are proud to celebrate Library Card Sign-Up Month this September, reminding Missourians that a library card is the most valuable tool for learning, growth, and opportunity.
This year, the Missouri State Library is calling on two important groups:
• State workers are encouraged to sign up for a Missouri State Library card, which provides direct access to research services, databases, e-books, and other resources to help them serve the people of Missouri.
• All Missourians are encouraged to get a card from their local public library, unlocking access to books, digital content, educational programming, and community events.
“Library cards are small, but they open doors to endless opportunities,” said Secretary Hoskins. “Whether you’re a state employee doing research or a parent taking your child to story time, Missouri libraries are here to serve you. I encourage every Missourian to sign up for a library card this September and experience the value of free, lifelong learning.”
The Power of Missouri Libraries
According to the 2024 Missouri Public Library Survey, libraries remain one of the state’s most heavily used and trusted public institutions:
• 3.96 million Missourians are registered borrowers.
• Libraries welcomed 17.5 million in-person visits and logged 29.9 million internet sessions.
• Public libraries hosted 1.48 million program attendees, from early literacy story times to general interest workshops.
• Statewide, libraries hold 14 million physical materials, plus millions of e-books, audiobooks, and streaming resources.
• Libraries handled nearly 2 million reference transactions, helping Missourians find answers and trusted information.
“These numbers show the strength and resilience of Missouri’s library system,” said State Librarian Janet Caruthers. “Libraries are adapting to new needs while continuing to provide the core services people depend on. A library card is the key to all of it.”
