EXECUTIVE ORDER

WHEREAS, the National Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act, P. L. 96-573, requires that states provide available capacity at disposal sites for low-level radioactive wastes generated within their borders, and

WHEREAS, pursuant to said Act, states may enter into compacts providing for establishment and operation of regional disposal facilities for low-level radioactive wastes and such compacts may restrict use of these facilities to wastes generated within the region, and

WHEREAS, approximately 400 companies and institutions in Missouri hold licenses to use and possess radioactive materials,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHRISTOPHER S. BOND, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI, hereby declare and direct the following:

A Task Force on Disposal of Low-level Radioactive Waste is hereby created. Said Task Force shall consist of twelve (12) members, eight (8) of which shall be appointed by the Governor of Missouri with due consideration being given to representation from Missouri higher educational institutions; citizen's groups; affected industry; local government; and the field of medicine. The Chairman of the Task Force shall be designated by the Governor.

In addition, two (2) members shall be members of the Missouri Senate, appointed by the President Pro-Tem of the Senate, and two (2) members shall be members of the Missouri House of Representatives, appointed by the Speaker of the House.

The purpose of the Task Force shall be to develop and propose to the Governor and the General Assembly any necessary legislation or administrative actions needed to solve Missouri's low-level radioactive waste disposal problem and enable Missouri to enter into an interstate compact as set forth above.

The Task Force shall meet at the call of the Chairman and shall dissolve on June 30, 1982, unless extended by subsequent Executive Order. Any proposed legislation shall be developed in time to be prefiled for the 1982 legislative session.
