EXECUTIVE ORDER

WHEREAS, better physical fitness resulting from a balanced diet, exercise and other forms of regular physical activity will provide health benefits to Missourians; and

WHEREAS, such benefits of physical fitness include reducing stress, heart disease and cancer and increasing life expectancy; and

WHEREAS, greater awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise can be an effective strategy to improve physical fitness of Missourians; and

WHEREAS, many public, community-based and private agencies and individuals have an interest and commitment to improved diet and exercise; and

WHEREAS, these interested groups and individuals can increase such awareness more effectively and efficiently by working in common; and

WHEREAS, the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health has, in the past, increased awareness of these issues; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate that the Governor expand this statewide effort to encourage all Missourians to become more physically fit and healthy;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BOB HOLDEN, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Laws of the State of Missouri, do hereby reauthorize the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health as follows:

Membership of the Council shall consist of twenty-nine members, all of whom shall serve two-year terms. Four members shall be members of the General Assembly and shall be appointed by the Governor to two year terms while such members are still in office as follows:

One Representative from the Majority Party and one Representative from the Minority Party, and one Senator from the Majority Party and one Senator from the Minority Party.

Five members shall be appointed by the Governor as follows:

There will be one member appointed from the Office of Administration, one member from the Department of Health, one member from the Department of Mental Health, one member from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and one member from the staff of the Governor or Lieutenant Governor.

The Executive Director of the Council, as appointed by the Governor, shall serve as an ex officio member of the Council.

The Governor may appoint a chairman of the Governor's Council, in addition to the twenty-nine members designated above. Other Officers of the council shall be determined in a manner as set forth in the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health bylaws. The Governor may appoint advisors and/or liaisons from allied health and fitness professions or other interested persons to provide a network between the council and other associations. The chair, in cooperation with the executive director, shall call meetings of the council at least quarterly. The Office of Administration shall provide staff assistance to the council. Members of the council or liaisons shall receive no compensation for their services, but may be reimbursed for the actual and necessary expenses incurred in the performance of their duties.

The duties of the council shall include but are not limited to: 1) advising the Governor, the Commissioner of Administration and others on ways to enhance the physical fitness and health of all Missourians; 2) improving the health and level of physical fitness of all Missourians through implementation of statewide programs; 3) improving the health and level of physical fitness of Missourians by fostering communication and cooperation between the health, fitness and sports communities and the general public; 4) improving the health and level of physical fitness of Missourians through creation of private and public sector support for health, physical fitness and sports programs and policy; 5) designating the host of the Show-Me STATE GAMES and serving on the Show-Me STATE GAMES Steering Committee, Finals Organizing Committee and any other committees formed to direct the Show-Me STATE GAMES.

The Missouri Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health shall report annually to the Governor and the Commissioner of Administration on its activities and on the results of its studies, and shall include any recommendations in said report.
