WHEREAS, September 11, 2011 marks the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States in New York City, Washington, D.C., and rural Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, and during the days immediately after, thousands of law enforcement, fire protection, and emergency response personnel rushed to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to make courageous and selfless rescue and recovery efforts, including Missouri responders, such as Missouri Task Force 1 and the Missouri 1 Disaster Medical Assistance Team; and
WHEREAS, in the ten years since 9/11, the men and women of the United States armed forces, including thousands of Missourians in the regular military and in the Missouri National Guard, have protected our country by valiantly serving at their posts, both at home and overseas, not only leaving loved ones for extended periods of time, but also carrying out missions under wartime conditions; and
WHEREAS, men and women in uniform have also responded many times in just the past year to the call of duty here in Missouri by providing tireless assistance that has saved lives and property in the wake of devastating natural disasters which have affected our state, including tornadoes in Joplin, Sedalia and the St. Louis area; flooding along our rivers; and a record blizzard; and
WHEREAS, the professionalism and training of those in uniform was particularly demonstrated after the Joplin tornado, when more than 400 law enforcement, fire protection and emergency response agencies rushed to Joplin to give badly needed help; and
WHEREAS, those who wear the uniform of the military, law enforcement, fire protection and emergency response services are committed to their duties and carry them out with a high degree of professionalism and integrity, even as they often put themselves in harm's way to protect the citizens of Missouri; and
WHEREAS, it is highly appropriate for Missourians to show their appreciation for those who wear the uniform in many ways.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Jeremiah W. (Jay) Nixon, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF MISSOURI, do hereby proclaim September 11-17, 2011, to be

IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused to be affixed the Great Seal of the State of Missouri, in the City of Jefferson, this 9th day of September, 2011.
