Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board (MHRAB)

The Missouri Historical Records Grant Program

The Missouri Historical Records Grant Program (MHRGP) is a collaborative effort between the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board (MHRAB) and the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), the grant-awarding arm of the National Archives and Records Administration. The grant program is administered by the Missouri State Archives, Office of the Secretary of State, on behalf of the MHRAB.  With funding from the NHPRC, the MHRAB is able to award financial assistance to help preserve and make accessible Missouri’s historical records and promote archival education and cooperation among the state’s records keepers.

Periodically, MHRGP regrants are available to all of the state’s public and private records repositories that care for documents of significant historical value. This includes historical, ethnic, and religious societies; museums; libraries; colleges and universities; and local government entities.  Grant funds may be used for archives, records management, and preservation projects, such as conservation services, consulting, indexing and description of collections, and the purchase of archival supplies and equipment. Currently, each project is eligible for up to $7,500 in grant funds. The MHRAB encourages applications related to traditionally under documented collections, specifically post-World War II immigrant communities, small and non-affiliated religious organizations, and vanishing Missouri-based businesses and institutions. The subject areas upon which the MHRAB focuses its efforts are reviewed regularly and changed accordingly.

The Archives and the MHRAB also sponsor training workshops for grantees at locations throughout the state. Attendance at one of these free workshops is required for each grant recipient, but the workshops are also open to anyone in the Missouri records community on a space-available basis. To learn more about upcoming workshops, please call (573) 526-1981.
