Union Provost Marshal Papers, Two or More Civilians, 1861-1867;
Recruitment List of Volunteers for the United States Colored Troops for the State of Missouri

During the Civil War and Reconstruction, Provost Marshals arrested deserters, spies, and disloyal civilians; investigated thefts involving military property or personnel; controlled access to military zones and transportation; and maintained records of prisoners, paroles and loyalty oaths.  These documents include correspondence, provost court papers, lists of prisoners, orders, passes, paroles, oaths of allegiance, transportation permits, and war claims.

The electronic files below were generated from microfilm created at the NARA for the War Department Collection of Confederate Records (Record Group 109.14.4 Miscellaneous Records, Microcopy 416, Rolls 1-83; Rolls 84-94, relating to prisoners were not indexed by MSA) and records of the Adjutant General's Office (Record Group 94; United States Colored Troop Enlistment; Indexed by the St. Louis County Library). 

The series here reproduced is comprised of the following parts:

(1) An incomplete place and subject index, on F1580, to some of the numbered files;

(2) Numbered files from 1 to 22737, those on F1581 to F1651 being arranged chronologically by year and month from March 1861 to December 1866, and those on F1652 to F1662 arranged partly in chronological order;

(3) Unnumbered files, on F1662, arranged chronologically by month from January to October 1867.

(4) Prison rolls, F1098-F1103; F1663-F1665; F1890-F1891 (not in Provost Marshal online index)

Note: the “F-number” reflects the microfilm number used by the Missouri State Archives; the “M-number” is the microfilm publication and roll number used by the National Archives.
