Panel 24 - The Iron Clad Oath

 

- The Burden of Proving Loyalty -

 

Some took the enforcement of the oath even further. Union military veteran George Easley sued Linn County registration officer Harvey Wauck for preventing him from voting even though Easley was willing to sign the iron clad oath. Easley claims Wauck asked him 36 additional questions, which are shown on this panel, and denied his right to vote because of alleged disloyalty acts committed during the war.

 

  • The pages featured on this panel are from an 1866 lawsuit filed by Easley in Linn County Circuit Court for $10,000 dollars in damages. The court dismissed the suit on the grounds that Easley had not shown sufficient cause.
