Panel 23 - The Iron Clad Oath

 

- Loyalty and the Right to Vote -

 

As might be expected, the disenfranchisement of a large portion of the population had a significant effect on Missouri elections.

 

  • The documents on this panel show the election returns for Boone County Missouri in August 1860 and November 1868. In the 1860 election, 2,600 voters went to the polls. William Switzler, a member of the 1865 Constitutional Convention who had opposed the oath, claimed that in 1866 all but 878 of the county's 5,000 eligible voters had been prevented from voting, and that this abuse of power engendered "a great bitterness of feeling, sometime approaching the verge of personal violence." In 1868, 350 voters went to the polls.
