- The End of Radical Power -

 

Despite the social upheaval of the Civil War, Missouri politics soon returned to something very similar to pre-war status. Even though the Radical Republicans had taken drastic steps to disenfranchise Southern sympathizers, by 1873 all but one of the statewide elected officials were Democrats.

 

  • The document featured on this panel is the roll call sheet for the Constitutional Convention of 1875, in which the delegates strengthened the power of the governor and weakened the legislature.
