The Missouri State Archives received a two-year grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission of the National Archives and Records Administration for the creation and implementation of the Missouri Electronic Records Education and Training Initiative. The grant funded two targeted presentations and seven workshops between 2003 and 2005, designed to increase knowledge and build strong support among state and local government officials as we work towards a viable and sustainable electronic records preservation strategy for the State of Missouri.

Project Goals

The goals of this initiative were two-fold:

  1. To promote awareness among state and local government officials, information technology managers, and legal professionals of issues concerning the long-term accessibility of electronic records.
  2. To increase the knowledge and expertise of the state’s archivists, records managers, and record-keepers in dealing with electronic records preservation and access.

Activities

Between September 2003 and October 2005, nationally recognized experts presented seven workshops and two targeted sessions in Jefferson City.

Workshops consisting of both basic and advanced sessions, were geared towards state and local government record-keepers, information technology managers, legal professionals, operating program managers, and others. These day-long education sessions were designed to provide attendees with information on various issues related to the policies, practices and technologies of electronic records access and preservation. The workshops featured nationally recognized expert instructors, and were well attended

Targeted presentations before the State's Information Technology Advisory Board (ITAB) and members of the Missouri Bar's Technology/Computer Law and Government Lawyers committees provided special awareness to groups of government officials who considerably influence electronic recordkeeping matters. The presentations addressed issues such as authenticity, trust-worthiness, and accessibility of records that are created and/or maintained in electronic form.
