Manufactures and Products of Industry Schedules

The United States first attempted to collect a “Census of Manufactures” in 1810, but these returns were considered widely inaccurate and incomplete.  The second attempt during the 1820 census was voluntary to report, so is also considered incomplete.  No census of manufactures was taken in 1830 or 1840.

The 1820 census of manufactures was taken for the Missouri Territory, but the original records did not survive.  The states that did are available on Microfilm through the National Archives (M-279). Information from the Missouri census of Manufactures is available in digest form.

1820 Census of Manufactures – Missouri Territory Digest

In 1850, the Census Bureau introduced a separate “Products of Industry” schedule.  These schedules produced aggregate data for each county and provide information on companies producing articles over $500 in annual value.  Fields included are:  the name of the business owner and/or the business; the type of business; capital invested; raw materials used, including fuel; kind of motive power, machinery, structure, or resource; average number of hands employed; wages; and annual product.  Additional details were added to each successive schedule.  In 1880, the schedule was re-named “Manufactures.”  It also added separate schedules on agricultural implements (1880-1), boot and shoemaking (1880-3&4), lumber and saw mills (1880-5&6), flour and grist mills (1880-7&8), and slaughtering and meat-packing (1880-9&10).

The 1850-1880 Industrial and Manufacturing Schedules are available by county below.  Not all counties have a schedule for each of the available years.  The original records are available at the Missouri Historical Society Library and Research Center.
